Hollrr is one of my favourite companies, since they are trying to empower the consumer via their platform and bypass the companies who are still trying to persuade customers to buy their products via shitty banner ads.
According to Hollrr “Social Media totally changes what effective advertising should be. Why should you believe a company that tells you their brand is good… when you can listen to the Twittersphere and find out exactly what users think of that brand? In this new world of promotion, shitty products have nowhere to hide… and great products will shine like they deserve to.”
However, I still wonder how they make their money, luckily I found this picture that answers this question. However, Hollrr is dedicated to let the products shine that deserve to shine. Nevertheless, often shineworthy products are produced by small companies/individuals based on their passion, but they lack the huge marketing budget to stimulate shouts on hollrr. As, I am working on a new project as well, I also face this problem. How do you create a business model that embraces both the SME’s as the multinationals?
However, Quirky might be the example to follow. Their platform enables product developers to submit their ideas at a cost of 99 dollars. Quirky then decides, which product is worthy to be produced and sold on the website based on the input of their online community to support their decision. Think of brand name, packaging etc and they will receive a small percentage of the 30% profit generated from the product idea together with the actual designer. Quirky only sells the product when it receives 500 pre-sale orders, but when a product doesn’t meet that number, the designer will receive the marketing data retrieved from the platform. The picture above shows the business model of Quirky, but this company did manage to offer value to all their stakeholders. The designers influencers and product designers win and so does Quirky. Selling user generated content in not new, but this approach seems to have the potential to grow large and the combination of Hollrr and Quirky might function as a sneak peek of new project;)
